Why Early Literacy matters
Why Early Literacy Matters
The Early Literacy program at Reading Pandas is based on the Reading Pyramid.
According to the Science of reading, reading skills can be fragmented into small foundational skills which are mentioned in the reading pyramid
Early literacy development refers to the developmental skills needed to help transition from "learning to read", to "reading to learn". Early literacy programs provides students with the platform to build a host of skills, including reading, writing and vocabulary building. These skills go a long way for students in future academic pursuits.

CORE SKILLS
Reading pandas offers multi-level Phonics, Early Reading, Early Writing Vocabulary and Creative Writing programs for children between the age group of 3.6 - 9 years. Our programs focus on building and honing the the following skillsets:
Phonics
Phonics instruction is the relationship between sounds of letters in the written and spoken language. It helps distinguish between the different sounds that eventually equip students to read and write. This is the ideal base for future reading and writing success.
Early Reading
Once students have acquired basic Phonemic awareness skills ,they graduate from reading simple decodables to complex texts.
Early Writing
The ability to write is directly correlated to a child’s reading ability, it shows that the child is making the connections between letters and sounds. Early writing is the foundation of early literacy, which empowers the child to express ideas.

Vocabulary
Vocabulary building is often misconstrued as usage of big, complicated words. The idea is to teach students the importance of using vocabulary which is relevant to the context and helps in effective and clear communication.
Creative Writing
While creativity and imagination has no boundaries, the real challenge lies in in articulating these ideas. While some have an inherent a flair for creative writing, it's a skill that can always be acquired through imagery, text genres and various crafts of writing.

Why should my child learn phonics?Worldwide a lot of research has been undertaken to further establish reading success and the science behind it. Research tells us that in order to become fluent readers, students need to learn to decode unknown words accurately and automatically. Students who must use all of their mental energy to sound out the words are not able to focus on the meaning of what they are reading (LaBerge and Samuels, 1974). In fact, research findings show that those students who have not developed automaticity by the beginning of second grade are at risk for reading failure (Berninger et al., 2003, Berninger et al., 2006).
-
Is phonics enough to develop strong early literacy? It should be noted that phonics is one element of a comprehensive literacy program that must also include practice in comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, writing, and thinking. Hence it’s crucial that your child’s reading program is holistic and encompasses all these skills for robust early literacy.

What is Phonemic awareness? It's the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds (Yopp, 1992)
-
Why is Phonemic awareness important to Reading Fluency?English uses an alphabetic writing system in which the letters, singly and in combination, represent single speech sounds. People who can take apart words into sounds, recognize their identity, and put them together again have the foundation skill for reading. Children who cannot distinguish and manipulate the sounds within spoken words struggle to become fluent readers. Instruction in speech-sound awareness reduces and alleviates reading and spelling difficulties (Adams, Foorman, Lundberg, & Beeler, 1998; Gillon, 2004; NICHD, 2000; Rath, 2001)
